Rafa Dizon — one-man studio, on purpose

About / the person behind the asterisk

I make type
behave like
it has muscles.

I started in 2017 compositing other people’s ads in a Quezon City post house, and I learned motion the way you learn to cook in a busy kitchen: volume, notes, and 1 a.m. render queues. In 2021 I went solo and named the practice KAON — Cebuano for eat — because the work I respected most didn’t decorate the screen. It ate it.

Today it’s a studio of one with a trusted bench: a composer in Cebu, a colourist in BGC, and a 3D rigger I have known since the post-house days. Brands and networks hire me for the things that are hard to un-see — a title sequence that sets the tone in eight seconds, a kinetic identity their team can actually run without me.

I answer my own email, I quote fixed prices, and every project ships with the templates and a training video. The goal is that you stop needing a motion designer for the small stuff — so the big stuff can come back to me.

The path
to one

  1. 2017

Cut my teeth at a QC post house

Two years of compositing other people’s ads at 1 a.m. Learned the craft the hard way: deadlines, notes, and why the render queue always lies.

  2. 2019

    In-house motion lead, Kapatid Media

Ran the graphics for a national TV launch package. First taste of building a system instead of a shot — and of defending a bezier curve in a boardroom.

  3. 2021

    Freelance. Took the name KAON

“Kaon” is Cebuano for “eat” — as in, the work should eat the screen. Went solo with one client, one laptop, and a very understanding landlord.

  4. 2023

    First title sequence

Designed main titles for a streaming thriller. Confirmed the suspicion: typography can act. Since then, titles have been half the practice.

  5. 2025

    Studio of one, on purpose

Turned down an agency buyout to stay a studio of one with a trusted bench — composer, colourist, and a 3D rigger I have known since 2018.

The toolkit

  • After Effects
  • Cinema 4D
  • Redshift
  • Houdini
  • Blender
  • Rive
  • DaVinci Resolve
  • Premiere Pro
  • Figma
  • TouchDesigner

The bench

KAON stays small so the work stays directed. When a project needs more hands, these are the people already on speed-dial — three collaborators, no agency middle layer, no mystery subcontractors.

Composer
Dne. Ombra — Cebu
Colourist
Mika Tan — BGC
3D rigging
Junrly Cruz — remote

Also taught a kinetic-type elective at the UST Adamson School of Industrial Engineering’s design track, twice a year since 2024.

Who has hired the studio

Twelve of the forty-odd accounts since 2021. If a name is on an invoice, the film shipped.
